Collection Instructions
- You need at least 1.5 inches of dye-free, non-bleached, and free of hair products scalp hair.
Prior to Collection
- Hair should be free of dye, bleach and/ or hair products
- If you have recently dyed your hair, please wait a minimum of 3 weeks (8 weeks is better) before collection
- If you use Head and Shoulders, Selsun Blue or any other anti-dandruff shampoo please discontinue for 2 weeks prior to collection and note this on your submission form. If it is impossible to temporary stop, please make sure to indicate use on submission form
- If you use shampoo with hormones or hair loss ingredients- please discontinue for 2 weeks prior to collection and note this on your submission form.
- Please avoid the use of public pools for at least one week prior to collection
- If a client showers in softened water or hard water, this can affect mineral levels. Please have your client wash their hair for 2 weeks with distilled water prior to collection. This will help you get the most accurate result.
Collection
- Collection hair sample at least 6 hours after washing it
- Scalp hair should be used whenever possible
- Beard hair and pubic hair can be used when scalp hair is not available but the results will be more difficult to interpret
- Hair needs to be taken from 3-4 locations at the base of the skull
- Hair must be cut as close to the scalp as possible
- Use the purple scale that was provided to you in your collection kit
- Fold edges of scale to create a teeter-totter
- Once hair has been cut from the scalp, cut off the long ends (further away from the scalp) so that the total length of hair sample is 1.5 inches
- Add hair to high side of scale
- Continue to add hair to scale until scale tips like a teeter-totter
- This means you have collected enough hair
